Hampton Convention, Visitor Bureau events, Jan. 26-27

The Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau announced the following events schedule for Saturday, Jan. 26 and Sunday, Jan. 27:

• On Saturday, Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. there will be a Mid-Atlantic Power League volleyball tournament. According to a release, "MAPL is a power league for elite junior girls' volleyball teams along the mid-Atlantic coast. MAPL provides high level competition for some of the best volleyball athletes across the country."

• On Saturday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. there will be a Country Winterblast 2013 event. According to a release, "Winterblast '13 Country Music Festival will again showcase an array of the hottest up-and-coming national country artists as well as local country artists at affordable ticket prices. Festival activities include karaoke, cornhole games, line dancing and more."

• On Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 a.m. there will be a Wilderness Survival class. Come to Sandy Bottom and learn with a ranger what to do if lost in the woods. You will learn things like how to start a fire, purify water, find food and build a shelter.

• On Sunday, Jan. 27 is the Hampton University Founder's Day. According to a release, "Gen. Samuel Armstrong founded Hampton University 144 years ago. Each year, HU's President Dr. William R. Harvey and other members of the HU community attend a commemorative wreath-placing ceremony at Armstrong's gravesite, a ceremony featuring a keynote speaker and an awards presentation."

The Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau is responsible for promoting tourism to Hampton and marketing and sales for the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Its staff consists of a sales team and media team. The executive director is Sallie Grant-DiVenuti.
